Aug 16th, 2008 Japan Fun Fact #2!Fact #2 - Valentines Day! In the US, it's customary for the guys to buy the girls chocolate, flowers, cards, etc. But in Japan, it's the opposite! That's right, in Japan it's the girls job to buy or make gifts for the guy of their heart's desire! BUT, before all of you guys move to Japan (lol), there is also a holiday shortly after Valentines called "White Day" for the girls! And that whole day is dedicated to giving gifts to girls and women. So, it's balances out! =p Aug 9th, 2008 Japan Fun Fact!!!Ah... I think I will post every week or so, some fun fact that I know about Japan. Why? Because I know so much about this interesting country and... I don't have anything better to do. =p Japan Fun Fact# 1 - Vending Machines! In Japan it is common to buy most things from vending machines now. You can get anything from anime plushies (toys), books, manga, and magazines... but also makeup, fresh fish and other seafood, burgers, and alcohol! Some of these machines are way advanced from the ones we have in the US. For the makeup, it's has a camera installed inside, so you can first take a photo of yourself. And using a touch-screen, you can then pick the right shades that will look best on you, before feeding the machine money and pushing the right button to get the makeup you want. And if you want burger for lunch, there is a machine that will actually fry you one on the spot, and then deliver it to you! And you never have to want for fresh or live fish again! Just run to your nearest vending machine! How this works, I'm not sure... but it will be the first thing I'll try, when I get there! XD Alcohol vendors are the most common, you can't walk for long, before passing one on the street! You would think Japan would have a huge problem with underage drinking, because of this, but the children there just don't take advantage. There have been no report of such incidents in Japan and when Japanese children and teens are asked why, their answer is simple, "It's against the law." Many business owners do and are planning to switch their merchandise to vending machines! It's cost efficient, where they don't have to pay for storefront space and utilities for the building. And the machines takes up very little electricity. Also, vandalism of the machines is very rare, almost non-existent, in Japan. Though, one group of business men became famous (or infamous) for a misuse of a machine. They had bought ownership of a machine and filled it with used ladies underwear (EWW!). And it was popular among many of the perverts there. They made a lot of money! But the authorities caught onto this scandal and made the men stop. They did try to argue that they have ownership of the machine and should be able to sell whatever they want in it. But in the end, the authorities won and the business was shut down. =p
